1968 Mercedes-Benz SL280 Pagoda W113
A truly exceptional example of one of Mercedes-Benz finest and most desirable models – please enquire.
Introduced in 1963 as the second generation of their SL or ‘Super Light’ series, the W113 continued Mercedes-Benz tradition for producing some of the world’s finest open sports-tourers.
Following their new design language with its elegantly proportioned lines and upright headlights, it was Paul Bracqs’ concave removable hard top that would earn the W113 its Pagoda moniker and remain one of the models most defining features.
Today considered as a masterpiece of sophisticated styling, the Pagoda stands as one of Mercedes most iconic and highly regarded models produced throughout their 120 year history.
We are delighted to offer this immaculately and fully restored RHD example of Mercedes-Benz classic 280SL. First registered in November 1968 and complete with the desirable and removable Pagoda hard-top, the accompanying MB Data Card confirms this 280SL remains in its original colour combination and specification with all-matching numbers.
Finished in immaculate Metallic Red paintwork (Code 571) with light Tan MB-Tex interior (Code 147) together with matching painted hardtop and new black mohair soft-top (Code 740). The factory specification includes power steering, four-speed automatic gearbox, heated glass screen for the hardtop together with the original Becker Europa radio.
In addition to the initial cost of purchase, the accompanying history file and photographic details of restoration contain invoices recording almost £200K having been spent to bring the SL to the condition it remains in today. With all works completed by renowned Mercedes-Benz specialists John Haynes between 2008 and 2018, Haynes described this 280SL/8 as, ‘a matching numbers, restored Concours example and one of the finest condition Pagodas in the UK’.
Shut lines to the aluminium and individually numbered bonnet, doors and boot lid are exceptional and the all-important spot welds remain visible to provide further evidence to the quality of restoration. The condition of all cosmetic elements including paintwork, brightwork and interior as well as the engine bay are all equally superb. Mechanically, the SL is just as impressive with recent and annual service work completed by John Haynes to ensure the Pagoda drives as well as it presents.
This beautiful example is testament to the craftsmanship involved to bring it back to its current condition as well as the fastidious care and attention of the previous owner with whom I have enjoyed the pleasure of dealing with countless special cars since the mid-1990’s.
